Both the House and Senate are not in session today.

The Senate will not be in session next week, except for two brief pro forma sessions on Monday, January 24th at 1:00 P.M. and Thursday, January 27th at 10:00 A.M.  The Senate will reconvene at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, January 31st and resume consideration of the nomination of Bridget Meehan Brennan to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio.

While the voting rights reform package failed this week, it is expected that a bipartisan group of senators will meet virtually over the break to work on reforms to the Electoral Count Act, which lays out how the Electoral College results are counted.  Republican leaders in both chambers and President Joe Biden are opening the door to changes to the 1887 archaic election law after former President Trump and his allies tried to overturn the Electoral College results, more detail about which was revealed this week.  The group’s talks are still in the early stages, with staff-level talks also happening. The group doesn’t yet have a proposal and aren’t publicly putting a timeline on when they’ll get there. Instead, members have exchanged ideas on what they want included in potential legislation.

The House is also in recess next week and will reconvene for votes at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday, February 1st.
