While a contentious hearing for Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Pentagon before the Senate Armed Services committee continues, the Senate stands adjourned until 12:00 P.M and following Leader remarks, the Senate will be in a period of morning business for debate only with senators permitted to speak therein for up to 10 minutes each. At 2:45 P.M. the Senate will resume consideration Cal.#1, S.5, Laken Riley Act. On Monday, the legislation cleared a second procedural hurdle in the Senate as talk turns to an amendment push by Democrats in order to potentially make alterations to the bill. Senators voted 82-10 on the motion to proceed to the legislation, allowing the chamber to begin debate. The legislation would mandate federal detention of immigrants without legal status accused of theft, burglary and other related crimes. It cleared an initial hurdle on Thursday by an overwhelming 84-9 margin with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) voting alongside 32 other senators who caucus with the Democrats. But where the bill goes from here is unclear. Leader Schumer said on the floor ahead of the vote that he was hopeful that Republicans would be open to Democratic amendments.
