While the House is in recess this week, the Senate today will take up the nomination of Katherine E. Oler to be an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia for the term of fifteen years and the nomination of Mustafa Taher Kasubhai to be United States District Judge for the District of Oregon. Later today, the Senate is expected to take up a Motion to concur in the House amendments to S.870, Fire Grants and Safety Act which reauthorizes through FY2030 the U.S. Fire Administration, the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program, and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant Program.
Senate Democrats on Tuesday will also try to pass legislation that would restore a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, an accessory that enables semi-automatic weapons to shoot at a very rapid pace, after last week’s Supreme Court decision striking down the ban. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) said Monday he’d bring up the legislation, Banning Unlawful Machinegun Parts (BUMP) Act, for a vote under unanimous consent, a procedure in which a measure passes so long as no lawmaker objects. He confirmed in a Senate floor speech Tuesday that Senator Martin Heinrich, (D-New Mexico), would seek passage of his bill banning bump stocks later in the afternoon. Republicans are likely to object to Leader Schumer’s unanimous consent request to pass the bill.
