The House voted resoundingly on Saturday afternoon to approve $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) put his job on the line to advance the long-stalled aid package by marshaling support from mainstream Republicans and Democrats. The vote was 311 to 112 in favor of the aid to Ukraine, with a majority of Republicans, 112, voting against it and one voting “present.” The House approved assistance to Israel 366 to 58; and to Taiwan 385 to 34, with Representative Rashida Tlaib, (D-Michigan), voting “present.” The bill to impose sanctions on Iran and require the sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner or ban the app in the United States passed 360 to 58. The four pieces of legislation will now be combined into one amendment before being sent to the Senate, where lawmakers will begin voting on it Tuesday. The Senate is likely to quickly pass the package, which would then head to President Joe Biden, who has signaled that he would sign it immediately.
The House is now in recess for Passover until Monday, April 29th. The Senate will convene tomorrow at 10:00 A.M. and will resume consideration of the motion to proceed to H.R.3935, An act to amend title 49, United States Code, to reauthorize and improve the Federal Aviation Administration and other civil aviation programs, and for other purposes. The Senate will then take up the motion to invoke cloture on the motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to H.R.815, Supplemental Appropriations.
