Both the House and Senate are spending today working to pass a short-term spending bill and avoid a government shutdown ahead of a winter storm that is set to hit Washington.  Government funding is set to expire at midnight on Friday night, but the incoming weather is pushing lawmakers to wrap up work sooner than that. The Senate and House are expected to pass another continuing resolution (CR) that would keep the government open on another two-deadline track through March 1 and March 8.  The Senate locked in a time agreement on Wednesday night to set up a series of votes starting Thursday afternoon and final passage of the six-week CR is expected to take place later Thursday afternoon after a series of amendment votes, then the House is set to take up the bill in short order after House leaders canceled votes Friday due to the weather.  The bill will then be sent to the White House for President Joe Biden’s signature. House members will vote for the bill under the suspension of the rules, meaning the CR will need two-thirds support to get it over the finish line.

As the Senate finishes work on  H.R.2872, Continuing Resolution, as amended with a 60 vote threshold, the House is expected to take up:  Senate Amendment to H.R. 2872 – Further Additional Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act, 2024, H.R. 6918 – Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, H.R. 6914 – Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, and S. 3250 – A bill to provide remote access to court proceedings for victims of the 1988 Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Both the House and Senate will not be in session tomorrow.
