Before leaving town for the Independence Day Recess, the House approved the INVEST in America Act today with a vote of 221 to 201. The measure would dedicate $343 billion to roads, bridges and safety, $109 billion to transit, and $95 billion to passenger and freight rail. It would also commit $117 billion to drinking water infrastructure and over $51 billion to wastewater infrastructure. The bill passed along party lines, even though it included funding proposed by Republican members that would explicitly help their districts.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) on Thursday named members of the select committee that will investigate the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, including Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming).  The other members are: Rep. Bennie Thompson, (D-Mississippi)- who will lead the panel, Rep. Pete Aguilar,( D-California), Rep. Zoe Lofgren, (D-California), Rep. Elaine Luria, (D-Virginia), Rep. Stephanie Murphy, (D-Florida), Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-(Maryland), and Rep. Adam Schiff, (D-California).

The Senate remains in recess and will reconvene at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12th.  The House will be in recess until Monday, July 12th and will then be in a committee work week that week, returning for votes on Monday, July 19th at 6:30 p.m.

President Joe Biden and the First Lady are in Surfside, Florida today to offer comfort to the grieving and pledge continued federal support for the ongoing efforts to search for the missing and rebuild after last week’s collapse of a high-rise condo building that killed at least 18 people and left 145 missing along the Florida coastline.  Biden, responding to what appeared to be the deadliest calamity of his young presidency, also met with first responders hunting for survivors among the rubble in Surfside. But underscoring the dangers still present in the search, work was halted before Biden arrived due to concerns about the stability of the section still standing.

Washington D.C. Daily Update will not publish next week as both the House and Senate are in recess and will resume on Monday, July 12th.
