The Senate remains in recess until July 12th at 3:00 p.m. for the Independence Day Holiday.  The House convened at 10 a.m. and began work on  H.R. 3005 – To direct the Joint Committee on the Library to replace the bust of Roger Brooke Taney in the Old Supreme Court Chamber of the United States Capitol with a bust of Thurgood Marshall.  The House will also take up H.R. 2662 – IG Independence and Empowerment Act which would limit a president’s ability to remove a sitting IG under a defined set of “for cause” reasons. It would also set up whistleblower training for IGs and their staff, and would give IGs subpoena authority to get testimony from contractors and former federal employees.  The House will also take up eight bills under suspension of the Rules including H.R. 3261 – To repeal the Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) on Monday introduced legislation (TEXT) that would create a select committee to probe the January 6th attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, and suggested she may include a Republican among her appointees.  The House Rules Committee considered the legislation Monday night. The House will hold a procedural vote on the measure today, and a vote on the legislation itself is expected Wednesday.  The Speaker’s move to form a select 13-member committee comes one month after Senate Republicans blocked an effort to create an independent, bipartisan commission.  The panel will investigate the facts and causes of the assault that left five dead and nearly 140 officers attacked as they faced rioters armed with ax handles, bats, metal batons, wooden poles, hockey sticks and other weapons. The riot led to the second impeachment of former President Donald Trump on a charge of “incitement of insurrection.”

President Joe Biden will be in La Crosse, Wisconsin today and will tour the La Crosse Municipal Transit Utility and deliver remarks highlighting the benefits the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework will deliver to communities across the country.  The President is expected to highlight the $48.5 billion included in the framework for public transit – funding intended to reduce both commute times and emissions. The president also plans to travel to Michigan on Saturday to deliver similar message.
